RapidShare will no longer offer incentives to users who share popular content. After having stopped cash payouts for their rewards program some time ago, RapidShare has now decided to discontinue the entire program. The file-hosting service cites complaints by copyright holders that the rewards were facilitating piracy as the reason for this move.

“RapidShare has decided not to participate in this battle and not to fight for the favor of criminals. Instead we would rather like to agitate against these activities and – if possible – to institute proceedings against those competitors of ours, who are intentionally supporting criminal activities,” Chang wrote in an email a few months ago.

Whether RapidShare’s most recent move to shut down the reward program will cause it to lose users is yet to be seen. If anything, it may have avoided yet another expensive legal battle while ensuring the site can continue to operate its business.

Repairs to a fault in the submarine cable network linking Malaysia to Europe and the United States is expected to cause disruptions in nationwide Internet services from Saturday until May 2.

However, Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM), in a statement here Friday, said it was taking active steps to minimise disruptions by adding additional links on other routes and coordinating with other international carriers to provide additional bandwidth for its customers.

“Despite these initiatives, customers using Internet services nationwide may experience some degree of service degradation, such as slow browsing while accessing international websites.

Edit: May 1 2010:Telekom Malaysia Berhad ™ is pleased to inform its customers that the repair works on the Southeast Asia – Middle East – Western Europe 4 (SMW4) submarine cable network between Palermo (Southern Italy) and Alexandria (Northern Egypt) linking Internet traffic from Malaysia to Europe and the United States (US), have now been fully completed.

TM has already recovered its bandwidth capacity for Internet traffic to Europe and the US to-date. TM Internet services have resumed normal operations since Friday, 30 April 2010. Therefore, all international links have been fully restored and our services have resumed back to normal.

We noticed that some user are transferring this file !ut from FTP. We are advising all user not to download this file as this has caused the utorrent back-end to crash or the selected download to stop on error.The !ut file will disappear once the utorrent has fully downloaded your selected torrent

For many years Rapidshare was considered to be a safe way for people to download copyrighted content without having to face repercussions. Recently, however, the company has been actively going after users that upload or download copyrighted files through the service by terminating accounts and logging IP-addresses for legal purposes.

In common with BitTorrent and other file-sharing services, Rapidshare has steadily increased its user base in recent years. The site has hundreds of millions of visitors each month and is listed among the 50 most-used sites on the Internet.

Like most file-hosting services, Rapidshare is hosting a wide range of music, movies and music files that are distributed without the consent of the rightsholders. This has dragged the company’s bosses into several lawsuits with copyright holders already, most recently they were ordered to proactively filter 148 book titles to avoid jail time and huge fines.

Although it is no secret that many people use Rapidshare to distribute copyrighted content, the site’s users have remained largely untouched until recently. Over the last few weeks, however, reports are coming in from users who’ve had their accounts terminated for downloading or uploading copyrighted files.

From the emails being sent out, it is clear that Rapidshare is taking a more aggressive stance towards ‘infringing’ users. Additional information from inside Rapidshare confirms that distributers of copyrighted material are indeed targeted more that before.

There is little doubt that this active termination policy is the result of ever-increasing pressure from copyright holders. At the same time, these actions might very well be the end of Rapidshare’s limitless expansion, as users will quickly move over to competing file-hosting services upon hearing this news.

Update: In addition to real terminations there have been reports of scam emails. However, we have additional information which proves without a doubt that Rapidhare is indeed targeting distributors of copyrighted material more aggressively by terminating their accounts. We will publish this in the coming days. We removed the quotes from the email we posted here earlier to avoid confusion.

Update: A Rapidshare spokesperson just confirmed that they are indeed terminating accounts of copyright infringers. “I can confirm that we reserve the right to terminate the accounts of users that do not act according to our terms and conditions,” we were told.

Please reset your IP to other range to get better speed (1 connection = 130kb+, if you adjust RWIN in window XP registry).

If you can’t reset your IP, please use download manager(flashget,IDM) to download and use max connection to get full speed.

Telekom Malaysia Berhad’s (TM) internet service on Sunday has been disrupted by a damaged underwater cable circuit at the Asian American Gateway (AAG) at Lantau, China.

A TM statement said with the damage at AAG which links Malaysia to the United States, customers surfing websites hosted in Hong Kong and the US would experience slow connection.

Those using internet protocol (IP) like virtual private network (VPN) and critical business applications linked to Hong Kong and US might encounter service disruption.
